On the Cliff

On the cliff
Wrapped by the violent wind
Waiting for something to happen
Just one thing
to bring lightning to her life
so it was worth it to breathe
every damn day
Watching her soul drowning in the mud
of what was what is what could be
in the days months years since
her first breath was spanked out of her
by a stranger clothed in white
I am here she shouts into the wind that
swallows her shuddering and
laughs all the way to the ends of the earth

Girl go home
ain’t nothing gonna happen
on this windblown cliff today tomorrow the next day
Girl just keep breathing
Because . . .
sometimes that’s all you can do
when the wind is tearing you down
and waiting for you to fall
